Today’s Wordle Answer June 16

The Wordle answer today is apron.

Because of how it sounds next to an indefinite article, the etymology of apron contains one of the best word formation events, when a word loses its initial nasal sound.

Originally, apron was pronounced similarly to ‘napron,’ and meant the same thing. However, the juxtaposition in the term ‘a napron’ became ‘an apron’ with time. This is known as ‘Rebracketing,’ and it has occurred in a variety of common words.

Other examples include orange, umpire, and snakes of the adder family.
